What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a cloudy lens. The eyes' natural ability to focus light on to the retina depends on having a clear lens. Symptoms of cataract include cloudy vision, glare symptoms, poor ability to read or difficulty with driving.
A cataract shown here is evidenced by the yellowish/green discoloration in the patients pupil:
What is cataract surgery like today?
Removing a cataract today is routinely done using an ultrasound based system that disrupts the cataract inside the eye and removes it in pieces. This is routinely done without sutures. Patients are frequently able to resume normal activities within a few weeks. Surgery is done as an outpatient and is a short procedure. Eye drops are used for several weeks to treat inflammation and prevent infection.
ReSTOR Lens Implant: near and distance vision
Cataract surgery can change the prescription in the eye of the patient. Multifocal lens implants, including the ReStor and Rezoom lens implants aim to provide useful distance and near vision with less dependence on spectacles. Results vary and candidacy should be discussed individually with a physician.

Astigmatism-Correcting Lens Implants
Astigmatism Correcting Lens Iimplants have also assisted in reducing astigmatism in patients who are appropriate candidates when their cataract is removed. These inlcude those with high amounts of astigmatism. The Alcon Acrysof Toric lens implant and the Staar Toric lens implants are examples of such lens implants.
